Busitema University is one of the public Universities in Uganda, established by Statutory Instrument No. 22, 2007 enacted by Parliament on 10th May 2007.  The University holds a pivotal and challenging responsibility as the only public University in the Eastern region to play a major role in the region's development.

Busitema University is a multi-campus model with the main campus located at Busitema, formally the National College of Agricultural Mechanization, along Jinja- Tororo highway, 25kms South West of Tororo Municipality

History

Busitema University was founded in 1968, with the assistance of the Soviet Union, as a government agricultural institute: Busitema National College of Agricultural Mechanization. In 2007, the college was elevated to university status, offering certificate, diploma and degree courses.

Location

Busitema University has its main campus in Busitema, Busia District on the Jinja - Tororo Highway, about 30 kilometres (19 mi), by road, southwest of Tororo. This location lies approximately 206 kilometres (128 mi), by road, east of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. The coordinates of the university's main campus are:0°32'42.0"N, 34°01'30.0"E (Latitude:0.5450; Longitude:34.0250).

Busitema University School of Medicine

Busitema University School of Medicine (BUSM), also known as Busitema University Medical School (BUMS) is the school of medicine of Busitema University, one of Uganda's public universities. The medical school is the newest medical school in the country, having been part of Busitema University, since 2013. The school provides medical education at diploma and undergraduate levels.

Location

The school's campus is located on the premises of Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, on Pallisa Road, in the central business district of the city of Mbale, in Mbale District, Eastern Uganda. This location lies approximately 247 kilometres (153 mi), by road, northeast of Kampala, Uganda's capital city capital and largest city. The coordinates of the school are:1°04'55.0"N, 34°10'35.0"E (Latitude:1.081944; Longitude:34.176389).

Overview

Busitema University School of Medicine constitutes the Faculty of Health Sciences at Busitema University. The faculty is headed by a Dean, who is deputized by a Deputy Dean. Many of the academic positions within the faculty are yet to be filled. The teaching disciplines of the medical school are integrated with the regional referral hospital. The hospital's consultants, registrars and interns collaborate in teaching the university's medical and nursing students
